Romek, a sensitive and forthright young man fascinated with the magic of art, 1 comes to the opera to work as a tailor. Gradually, as he is confronted with the I reality behind the scenes - the bickering, petty jealousies, vindictiveness and corruption - his illusions shatter. The film ends with Romek sitting in frant of a blank sheet of paper on which he is to denounce his friend, a fellow tailor who w was sacked through the maliciousness of one of the perforrners.
